About this Item
This leading Bordeaux château dates back to the fourteenth century. The estate is located at the southern edge of Pauillac, bordering the Saint-Julien vineyards of Château Léoville-Las Cases. It was purchased in 1993 by the French industrialist François Pinault, whose empire has grown to include Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, and Christie’s Auction House. Under the presidency of Frédéric Engerer, a major program of investment has taken place, leading Château Latour to rise to an undisputed pre-eminent position in the Bordeaux wine hierarchy. Rated as a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, which is a testament to its esteemed status in the wine world, Château Latour has become one of the most sought-after and expensive wine producers on the planet. It produces powerfully structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines capable of lasting many decades.

Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.
Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.
Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.

‘The 1961 Latour poured at the vertical in Hong Kong is unquestionably one of the finest bottles that I have tasted. It has a breathtaking bouquet: fresh as morning dew and brilliantly delineated, intense black fruit whereby every atom is suffused with mineralité. It feels so youthful and vital. The nose is the apotheosis of Bordeaux being so aromatically regal and aristocratic. The palate is medium-bodied, with tannins sculpted by the finest chisel in the set: tightly wound black fruit, a perfect line of acidity and a breathtaking delineation, utterly harmonious and blessed with a persistent graphite-tinged finish that lasts over a minute. ‘Amazing deep crimson – quite staggering depth of colour. This particular bottle seemed even more youthful than either of those I have been lucky enough to taste so far this year. So thick and dense and concentrated, but unctuous too. Bone dry on the finish and more potential than actuality for the moment. I can hardly believe the drinking dates I am suggesting for this wine! ‘Port-like, with an unctuous texture, and a dark garnet color with considerable amber at the edge, the 1961 Latour possesses a viscosity and thickness. One of the three bottles served at the Chateau's tasting revealed a surprisingly aggressive, minty, herbaceous nose, but the other two bottles were liquid perfection, exhibiting fragrant, cedary, truffle, leather, mineral, and sweet, jammy aromatics, full-bodied, voluptuous textures, exquisite purity and concentration, and a layered, highly-nuanced finish that represents the essence of compellingly great wine. The 1961 has been fully mature for over 15 years, but it seems to get richer, holding onto its succulence and fat, and developing more aromatic nuances without losing any sweetness or concentration.
