Notes

The quick, deft lines of these sketches intimate a sure but rather impatient disposition as the ideas in Hodgins’ mind tumble forth and are vigorously captured on paper. They explore spaces of uncertainly, risk and experimentation. Many of the drawings attempt to capture a specific facial expression, usually with wild lines that suggesting a gaping mouth engaging in some or other animated discourse. Or they attempt to capture a specific bodily stance. If Hodgins was uncertain about a figure in a painting, he simply resorted to pencil and paper and generated a variety of human shapes, one of which would suggest the way a shape evolves into a human form, perfect for his painterly purposes on canvas.' – Wilhelm van Rensburg
